Sneaky Things That Might Be Causing Your Acne

Did you know there are sneaky things that might be causing your acne?  Do you cleanse, moisturize, and spot treat regularly? Drink a gallon of water a day and still have trouble with acne? Well, contrary to popular belief, breakouts don’t just happen because of bad hygiene or not enough water. (Though those are great places to start towards fixing your skin). But there are literally tons of other reasons why your skin might be acting up and some of these reasons might come as a surprise to you. What most people don’t realize is that the foods you eat or your everyday activities could actually be contributing to your breakouts. Read about some of these pesky culprits below.

Dairy

I wish I would have realized this one sooner but dairy and I are not friends. Any time I consume dairy I am left with breakouts the next couple days after. Especially if I drink milk or certain protein shakes. If you regularly consume dairy and are having trouble keeping your skin clear then I really suggest you try avoiding dairy for while to see if that helps.

Cell Phones

Bacteria and oil from your hands and any other surfaces that your phone touches can build up on your phone. This can cause breakouts on your cheeks and chin if your phone touches your face while your talking on it. To prevent this wipe your phone down regularly with anti bacterial wipes and try not letting your phone touch your face whenever possible.

Over Exfoliating

Unfortunately,  I used to think that I could just scrub my problems away which lead to really irritated and inflamed skin that just broke out even more. Over exfoliating causes the skin to become inflamed which just makes clogged pores even worse. Try cutting back exfoliating to just a few times a week and see if that calms down your skin.

Stress

Not only does stress mess with your mental health but it also can cause your skin to freak out. Because stress causes an increase in a hormone called cortisol. This hormone makes your oil glands produce more oil and often leads to pesky breakouts that are hard to get rid of. Make sure to get enough sleep, exercise regularly, and make time for yourself every day to just relax. Even if its only for a few minutes.

Your Pillowcase

Oil, dirt, sweat, makeup, hair products, and bacteria can all build up on your pillowcase and create a not so nice environment for your skin to touch. I know I use lots of oil in my hair to keep it healthy which means lots of oil probably builds up on my pillowcases at night. I would suggest investing in a few pillowcases to change out regularly. What I do is sleep on one side of the pillow case and then flop it over the next day. Then I change it to a new one after that. It might seem like a lot of work but trust me its easier than dealing with breakouts.

Hair Products

Some hair products that are really thick and greasy can drip onto your skin and clog your pores. If you are noticing more breakouts around your hairline, neck, and back it might be from your hair products. Always try to shield your face when spraying hair products and try not to use products around your hairline. To avoid bacne and chest acne, always make sure to wash your body after you rinse out the conditioner from your hair while you are in the shower. Also, when wearing tank tops or clothing that exposes your shoulders, chest, and back try to wear your hair up and off of your skin to prevent your hair products from clogging the pores on your body.
